Session Seventy-Two: The Child

Note: For those unfamiliar with Dark Sun, psionics are called the Will for wild talents and the Way for trained psionicists.

When Vashti did not move through the portal, the rest of the group grew concerned. They left their kank in Kuresh and moved back threw the portal, to Fort Isus. Vashti quickly informed them that Samir was inside the armored caravan. The armored caravan began moving away, being pulled by huge mekillots at a medium pace.
The group rushed the caravan, with weapons drawn. There were guards walking along with the caravan and they scrambled to intercept the group. The troops had been expecting rest at the fort, not an attack, so they were caught a bit off guard.
Shade, Kalino, Kiara, and Vashti engaged with the wagon's guards, while Julius attacked the wagon directly. Julius began by using the way to burn the large ropes tying the mekillots to the wagon. Alaxander was turned invisible by Kalino and then used the way to move through the walls of the armored caravan, in order to explore it.Alaxander discovered a large group of slaves and opened a dimension door that lead outside. The slaves were reluctant to move through it, with a disembodied voice telling them to. Some of the slaves eventually braved the dimension door and returned to tell the other slaves to follow.
Alaxander was confused, because there was a room on the armored wagon with no entrance. He moved through the wall and saw a room with scroll shelves and tables covered in an assortment of creature body parts and unknown fluids. There was also a comfortable looking chair and a wicker bassinet. Inside the bassinet was a gith infant. Alaxander was excited, until he spotted the undead being who was in the room with him.
The undead being was wearing fine clothes and metal jewelry. Alaxander was afraid and stayed as far from the undead being as possible. The undead creature raised his head and began looking around. He said something in a language Alaxander did not understand, but knew he was being addressed. The undead creature obviously did not know the exact location of Alaxander, because he kept looking around.
Alaxander decided he could wait no longer and reached out for the baby. As he was scooping up the child, the invisibility spell was exhausted and the undead monster saw him. Alaxander immediately teleported away.
Meanwhile, the rest of the group was finishing off the perimeter guards. Julius had succeeded in slowing the wagon down, by damaging the yoke and ropes that held the mekillots in place. He had also used the way to explode a large hole in the side of the wagon, from which the remaining slaves were escaping. Some of the archers shot at the escaping slaves, killing a few, and hoping the rest would return to the wagon. None of the slaves returned.
Although the fighting was fierce and the group was taking heavy damage, they eventually boarded the wagon and began fighting hand to hand with the guards. The group made good use of the wagon's confines to funnel enemies into kill zones. Samir was badly wounded and fled from the group.
Alaxander thought he was safe, after teleporting, but was quite surprised when the undead creature teleported a few feet away from him. The undead spoke in Tyrian and told Alaxander to give him the child, or he would die. Vashti was nearby. In response, Alaxander grabbed Vashti's arm and teleported away, taking the child and Vashti with him.
The undead creature did not give up and, again, teleported to Alaxander's location. The creature pointed a finger at Alaxander and thin beam of light shot from it and struck Alaxander. It was the same use of the way that Julius manifested, when he forced people and things to turn to dust. Alaxander felt his whole body tingle, but nothing else happened. In response, Alaxander teleported himself, the baby, and Vashti away again.
By now, Alaxander and Vashti were in the gith camp and when the undead appeared near him, he got a disgusted look on his face. He then looked angrily at Alaxander and Alaxadner felt alarmed. Thankfully for Alaxander, the undead creature did not attack, but simply teleported away.
The rest of the group finished taking over control of the armored wagon. Any who surrendered were allowed to flee and those who fought against them died. Samir fled, along with the driver of the wagon. The driver warned that if they could not control the mekillots with the way, the mekillots were likely attack them. Julius said he understood and told the driver to leave, which he did.
After looting the wagon, Julius noticed the odd area, where a room could fit, but there were no doors or windows. Julius used the way to create a hole in the wall, from which he could see inside. He saw the undead creature and gasped. The undead turned to him and told him that he cared not for the wagon, or its mortal caretakers. However, if he interfered with him in any way, that Julius would die. Julius said he understood and closed the hole in the wall.
Julius told the group that there was a monster in the hidden room and they should just take their spoils and go. The group agreed. They gathered four full barrels, three crates, and two small chests. They then got off the fortress wagon and allowed the mekillots to slowly pull it away. While the mekillots were still yoked together, one of them was no longer attached to the wagon, so they were going in a circle. Alaxander, Shade, and Julius laughed.
